The department of English was established in the academic year 1970-71 for teaching Part II English to other disciplines. The undergraduate course BA English as a self financing stream was started in 2005-06, which was later brought under the government discipline in the year 2006-07. The department introduced M.A English in the year 2013-14 whereas M.Phil in English started in the academic year 2017-18.The department was recognized as a research department in the year 2012-13.

Department of English provides specialized knowledge and exposure New Literatures in English, Linguistics, Comparative Literature and Communicative Competence. It also seeks to develop sensitivity to human and social values through literature. Dr. C. Alagan, Assistant Professor & Head of the Department has been actively involving in Research and have worked on UGC Major Project and have published Research Papers in reputed Journals.
